Humbie the Little Crocodile is the longest book series I’ve had the pleasure of illustrating, and Humbie has become a character who is very close to my heart.
Over the course of eight books, I had the opportunity to grow alongside this little crocodile, bringing his adventures to life one page at a time. Spending so many years with the same character made this project especially meaningful, and each new book felt like revisiting an old friend.
One of the highlights of this journey was working with such a wonderful editorial team. Their kindness, encouragement, and trust made every stage of the process a joy, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to collaborate with.
Every illustration in the series was traditionally painted in watercolour, a medium I love for its soft textures and gentle atmosphere. It felt like the perfect fit for Humbie’s warm-hearted adventures.
One of my favourite memories came years later, when I was invited to my daughter’s school to lead a storytelling and illustration workshop featuring Humbie. Reading the books with my daughter and her classmates, seeing them laugh, imagine, and engage with a character I had painted so many years before, was an incredibly special moment. It reminded me that children’s books have a beautiful way of connecting generations and creating memories that last far beyond the final page.
